A Conversation with bell hooks
Akua Duku Anokye
On February 14, 2012, the West Campus at Arizona State University was graced with the majestic presence of feminist, critical race scholar, and culture critic bell hooks.
Sponsored by the Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies Division, the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, and ASU Project Humanities, among others, bell hooks's talk focused on the novel and movie The Help. Turns out, she is no fan of either, and she offered a vital, insightful, mordant perspective. With 300+ members in the audience, conversation during the Q&A ranged from The Help, to gender and race in America, to the importance of a critical perspective on contemporary life, to the emotional and intellectual perils of speaking out.
During her visit, bell hooks graciously took the time to sit down for an interview with Akua Duku Anokye, Associate Professor of English and Associate Director of the HArCS Division. Duku, a member of the TRIVIA Editorial Collective, is also a founding member of the ASU Oral History and Ethnography Collaborative. The interview was filmed by HArCS Fine Arts Specialist Charles St. Clair, also a member of OHEC, and edited by members of his team, including Jimmy Le.
