Nothing to Lose
Andrea Poniers
Working notes
I often start writing short stories with an opening line or thought and no idea where the story will go. That was true of “Nothing to Lose,” which originally had an opening paragraph about Jonathan wanting to be a ventriloquist (a childhood dream of mine). Obviously that opening is gone, but the idea of speaking or acting in someone else’s stead became critical to the story. It’s a good reminder to trust the process and to be open to making changes that ultimately will make the story stronger.
About the author

Andrea Poniers started writing fiction twenty years ago. Her short stories have been published in Fine Gardening, the Mountain Gazette, and the Harrington Lesbian Fiction Quarterly, and she was the second place winner in the Writer’s Digest Short Short Fiction Contest. She is starting over on a novel that she just can't seem to give up on. Fifteen years ago, Andrea moved from Michigan to Boulder, Colorado, where she is a left-brained public health professional by day. She met her partner while serving on the board of a women’s book cooperative 26 years ago, which is just another way that books and literature have enriched her life.
